What are PRP injections?
PRP is injected into your joints for soft tissue and wound healing through the use of bioactive growth factors, stem cells, and natural proteins. Additionally, it aims to reduce chronic pain and joint deterioration.
Anyone can benefit from PRP therapy, including people with the following medical issues:
- Arthritis
- Torn ligaments
- Tendonitis
- Sports injuries, including tennis or golfer's elbow
- Loss of flexibility and range of motion
The PRP injection promotes the growth of new blood vessels and tissues in the desired area, which improves blood flow and regenerates damaged tissue.
What are the benefits of PRP injections?
At Woodlands Center for Special Surgery, PRP injections are offered with the goal of providing you with the following benefits:
- Treating chronic pain
- Reducing tendonitis symptoms
- Decreasing osteoarthritis symptoms
- Reducing lower back pain
- Healing conditions such as runner’s knee and plantar fasciitis
The experienced team offers the cutting-edge PRP injection, a quick, noninvasive, and virtually painless procedure to help you improve your quality of life physically and emotionally.
How do PRP injections work?
Your provider draws a sample of your blood from your arm and places it in a centrifuge, which spins your blood at a high velocity, separating out the platelets. These platelets contain growth factor proteins that promote healing and tissue regeneration in your body. They then take the concentrated platelets from the centrifuge and recombine them with your blood plasma to create PRP.
If need be, your provider can apply a numbing cream around the desired area to ensure your comfort while injecting the PRP. The injection rejuvenates your joint’s function and decreases the pain by attracting stem cells and new blood vessels to the area.
What can I expect after PRP injections?
The procedure is relatively fast, lasting around 30-45 minutes. While some patients can feel the results of the treatment in a few weeks, it often takes six to nine weeks to truly assess your response to the PRP injection.
There is no downtime, and you can return to your daily activities right away. Side effects are uncommon but may include slight irritation and itching in the treatment area.
