Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction

Woodlands Center For Special Surgery

Orthopaedic, Hand, Foot & Ankle Surgeons & Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Specialists located in The Woodlands, TX & Willis, TX

Traditional bunion surgery can eliminate the bump, but there’s a good chance the bunion will recur. If you want a longer-lasting solution, it’s time to consider Lapiplasty® 3D bunion correction, a procedure performed at the Woodlands Center for Special Surgery in The Woodlands and Willis, Texas. Mark Ciaglia, DO, William J. Jordan, MD, Hemali Patel, DPM, and the rest of the team stand behind this innovative bunion surgery and appreciate how it corrects the root cause of a bunion. What is Lapiplasty 3D bunion correction?

The Lapiplasty procedure delivers long-lasting results by repairing the three bone movements (3D) responsible for the bunion, and then implanting an innovative fixation device to stabilize the joint.

Movement in the metatarsal bone leads to a bunion. The metatarsal bone connects to the base of the big toe on one side (in the MTP joint) and to the middle foot on the other end (forming the TMT joint).

The bunion is in the MTP joint, but the problem begins in the TMT joint. Pressure placed on a weak TMT joint allows the metatarsal to rotate, twisting the bone out of alignment. (The first of the 3D movements.)

The twisting motion pushes the bone out of the MTP joint, forcing it to lean outward and tilt upward. (The second and third of the 3D movements.) These movements cause the bunion, creating a bump on the side of your foot.

When would I need Lapiplasty 3D bunion correction?

A bunion is a deformity that develops due to excessive pressure on the joints. Your inherited foot structure may be the culprit. Wearing tight-fitting shoes can also add pressure that makes bunions develop and accelerates joint damage.

Without treatment, the bunion and its visible bump keep enlarging. You may also have symptoms such as:

  • Pain and tenderness
  • Inflammation and redness
  • Calluses or corns
  • Limited toe movement

The standard treatment for a bunion includes:

  • Wider shoes
  • Bunion pads
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Corticosteroids
  • Physical therapy

These treatments can ease the pain and may slow progressive joint movement. However, they do not change the existing bunion. Surgery is the only way to eliminate a bunion.

What are the benefits of Lapiplasty 3D bunion correction?

Conventional bunion surgery, a bunionectomy, straightens the MTP joint but doesn’t deal with the root of the problem: the TMT joint. The bunion bump disappears, but the unstable joint remains. As a result, in one in four people, the bunion returns.

By comparison, Lapiplasty corrects the MTP joint and implants titanium plates in the TMT joint. The plates strengthen the joint, preventing the misalignment that causes bunions.

Lapiplasty eliminates the bunion and corrects the cause. Nearly a year and a half after lapiplasty, only one in 100 people has a recurrent bunion.
