What are stem cells?

Where do stem cells come from?

Stem cells used to accelerate healing are sourced from your body, often via fat or bone marrow, or from donated cells sourced from a lab. Mesenchymal stem cells are specialized adult stem cells converted into cartilage, muscle, fat, or bone cells.

What should I expect during stem cell injections?

Prior to receiving stem cell injections at the Woodlands Center for Special Surgery, your provider may retrieve stem cells from your body’s fat tissues or bone marrow.  To do so, they numb the area and use a syringe to extract bone marrow fluid or obtain fat tissue from your abdomen (or other areas). This step isn't required if you’re using donated stem cells. 

During stem cell injections, your specialist gently injects the new cells into injured or painful areas of your body. After the procedure, limit strenuous activity until the injured area heals. Optimal function and pain relief may appear within six weeks, depending on the severity of tissue damage you’ve experienced.
